In a shocking turn of events, Wanderlei Silva, a legendary figure in the world of mixed martial arts, found himself in a precarious situation following an exhibition boxing match in Sao Paulo. On Saturday, Silva, who is now 49 years old, was hospitalized after suffering a knockout during a chaotic postfight altercation. This incident has raised eyebrows and sparked discussions about sportsmanship in combat sports.
Silva faced off against 50-year-old Acelino Freitas in a match that took a dramatic turn when Silva was disqualified in the fourth round for delivering illegal headbutts. But here's where it gets controversial: immediately after the fight concluded, chaos erupted as members from both fighters' camps stormed the ring, leading to a violent brawl. During this melee, Silva was struck by a right hand, causing him to collapse to the canvas. Reports from Brazilian media have identified the individual responsible for the punch as Rafael, the son of Freitas.
Following the incident, Fabricio Werdum, a former UFC champion and one of Silva's cornermen, took to social media to share the grim news that Silva had sustained a fractured nose and required stitches on his face. Werdum expressed his outrage, stating, "The images don't lie. It was so evil for that guy to punch Wanderlei. He punched the back of the head of Wanderlei. I don't know if it landed clean, but it could have been something very serious."
In a twist of blame, Acelino Freitas pointed fingers at Silva's corner, particularly at Werdum, who he accused of instigating the brawl by throwing punches at Freitas and his team. Freitas remarked, "When the fight ended, the referee disqualified Wanderlei for the three headbutts, his coach went after me and punched me. Wanderlei, the fight was between you and me and had nothing to do with the team. If you headbutted me, cool, I don't care. But unfortunately, Werdum cowardly entered the ring with your son and went all over everybody. And I saw that someone also punched you."
As of now, neither the Brazilian National Boxing Council nor the event promotion, Spaten Fight Night, has announced any immediate disciplinary actions regarding the incident. Spaten Fight Night did release a statement emphasizing that the events that transpired do not align with their values of "sportsmanship and respect to the rules."
This boxing match marked Silva's return to the ring after his retirement from MMA in 2018. Initially, he was set to compete against fellow Brazilian MMA icon Vitor Belfort, but Belfort withdrew from the match, leading to Freitas stepping in on short notice. The exhibition was scheduled for eight rounds, with Silva weighing in a staggering 44 pounds heavier than Freitas.
