Hold onto your wallets, car enthusiasts! Toyota’s 2026 RAV4 is making waves in Australia with price hikes of up to $4,000, and now American buyers are on edge, wondering if their favorite SUV is about to get a lot pricier. But here’s where it gets controversial: could this be a sign of things to come for U.S. drivers? Let’s dive in.
Just weeks ago, Toyota gave journalists—including Carscoops’ Stephen Rivers—a sneak peek at the all-new 2026 RAV4. While the test drives are in, the U.S. pricing remains a mystery. Across the globe, however, the story is unfolding in Australia, where Toyota has unveiled a full lineup with some eye-popping price increases. And this is the part most people miss: not all models are getting more expensive, but the ones that are could hint at a broader trend.
In Australia, the 2026 RAV4 will be available in 11 variants, mirroring the U.S. lineup of the previous generation. While model names differ, the standard features align closely with their American counterparts. So, how much pricier is it Down Under? The hybrid GX 2WD now starts at AU$45,990 (roughly US$30,000), a jump of AU$3,730 (US$2,400) or about 8.8%. The GX AWD climbs 9% to AU$49,340 (US$32,200). Higher up, the GXL 2WD and AWD versions rise by 6.9% and 7.2%, respectively, to AU$48,990 (US$32,000) and AU$52,340 (US$34,200).
Here’s the twist: not every model is more expensive. The Edge AWD and XSE AWD have actually dropped by AU$3,020 (US$2,000) and AU$5,755 (US$3,700), respectively. But the Cruiser 2WD and AWD have soared to AU$56,990 (US$37,200) and AU$60,340 (US$39,400), marking a staggering 10.8% increase or nearly AU$6,000 (US$4,000). New to Australia is the RAV4 PHEV, starting at AU$58,840 (US$38,400) for the XSE 2WD and topping out at AU$66,340 (US$43,300) for the GR Sport AWD.
But here’s the burning question: Will U.S. buyers face similar hikes? It’s too early to say, but if Toyota mirrors Australia’s 7 to 11% increases, the 2026 RAV4 could start closer to $35,000—a far cry from the 2025 model’s $29,800 base price. And with the flagship GR Sport AWD potentially nearing $50,000, it could compete directly with luxury brands like Genesis, BMW, Volvo, and Mercedes-Benz. Is this a bold move or a risky gamble?
