South Carolina WBB: Adjusting to Chloe Kitts' Injury | 2025-26 Season Preview (2025)

The South Carolina women's basketball team faces a challenging season ahead, but head coach Dawn Staley remains unwavering in her confidence. Despite the devastating news that senior Chloe Kitts will miss the entire season due to an ACL tear, Staley refuses to let this setback dampen the team's spirit.

But here's where it gets controversial... Staley believes in the resilience of her team, stating, "We're unafraid to go into the season without Chloe. Our players know any time we sustain an injury, we believe in the system and the players we've assembled."

With Kitts out, the Gamecocks will have just 10 healthy players and will need to fill a significant void left by her absence. Kitts, along with Ashlyn Watkins and Sania Feagin, accounted for a substantial portion of the team's offensive production last season.

And this is the part most people miss... The frontcourt will undoubtedly be affected, but the backcourt has also undergone changes. Staley lost two guards to the WNBA Draft and another to the transfer portal, leaving a gap to fill. However, she has brought in Ta'Niya Latson, last year's leading scorer in the country, to bolster the offense.

Latson, a confident and talented guard, understands her role and the impact she can make. She says, "I came here to be me. They recruited me to be myself, so I just have to play my game and continue to grow. I know I bring scoring to the table, and that's what matters most."

The team's veterans, Raven Johnson, Tessa Johnson, and Maddy McDaniel, along with promising freshmen Ayla McDowell and Agot Makeer, should provide stability in the backcourt. Latson praised the freshmen for their quick adjustment to college basketball, saying, "They have great IQs and handle their business. It's rare to see freshmen come in and take their craft so seriously."

With the season set to begin in November, Staley and the Gamecocks have time to adapt and make the necessary adjustments. Staley reflects on her successful tenure, noting that they've won a national championship despite sustaining injuries in the past.

"We'll figure out a way," she says. "I'm glad we don't have to make adjustments mid-season this time. We'll go with who's healthy and ready to go."

So, will South Carolina's women's basketball team overcome these challenges and have a successful season? Only time will tell. What are your thoughts? Do you think they can rise to the occasion? Feel free to share your predictions and opinions in the comments below!
